RASHID MURTUZALIEVICH TIKHILOV

MD, professor

Rashid Tikhilov graduated in 1980 from Military Medical Academy named after S.M.Kirov summa cum laude and worked his way up from medical officer at surface ship to professor of chair for field traumatology and orthopaedics. From 2001 till 2003 Prof. Tikhilov was leading the traumatology and orthopaedics department at St.Petersburg Research institute of emergency medicine named after I.I.Dzhanelidze. In 2003 was appointed director of Russian Scientific research institute of traumatology and orthopaedics named after R.R.Vreden. Successfully leading the institute as of 2004 Rashid Tikhilov is being professor of chair for traumatology and orthopaedics at North-West medical university named after I.I.Mechnikov.

Rashid Tikhilov is the recognized authority in his professional area. The current concept of hip joint surgery was established in the institute under his guidance: from limb preserving techniques to joint replacements in severe cases and revision surgeries. Started research for efficiency evaluation of new surgical procedures for treatment of dysplastic coxarthrosis – periacetabular osteotomies and joint replacement for high hip dislocations using various shortening osteotomies. New research areas are dedicated to biofilm formation mechanism and potential influence on microbial films by medications containing silver nanoclusters that provide the basis for prophylaxis and treatment of deep infection after large joints replacement and other implant associated infections. Another important research area is the development of customized joint surgery system based on prototyping technologies and 3D printing of customized implants that are of a paramount importance for revisions of large joints.

In result of Prof.Tikhilov’s activity the Research institute of traumatology and orthopaedics named after R.R.Vreden became well known among international trauma and orthopaedics community, contacts with leading university clinics of neighboring and foreign countries were greatly expanded. Over 30 scientific and practical conferences and symposia as well as over 130 master classes dedicated to various areas of traumatology and orthopaedics were held under the guidance of Prof.Tikhilov. One of the key events is the annual international conference “Vreden’s Readings” that gathers more than 900 Russian and 100 foreign participants.       

Scientific credits of Rashid Tikhilov are recognized by his regular participation as moderator and invited lecturer to annual symposia and congresses of scientific associations like SICOT, EFORT, EHS and ISTA.

Prof. Tikhilov is the author of more than 600 scientific publications including co-authorship and editorship of 25 monographs, manuals, chapters at guidance manuals and two textbooks. Hirsch index in Russian Science Citation Index – 14, Scopus and Web of Science index – 3.
